Dental providers are among the top prescribers of antibiotics, prescribing nearly 25 million courses each year. Despite an overall decline in outpatient antibiotic prescribing, dentists continue to prescribe at pre-COVID-19 pandemic rates. Dental antibiotic prescribing guidelines appear to have had little influence on prescribing rates, yet data show slight improvements in antibiotic stewardship efforts. It is imperative that the entire dental team understands the principles of dental antibiotic stewardship so that a consistent message is communicated among team members and their patients.

Learning objectives:

  • Review guidelines and best practices for antibiotic use in the dental office.
  • Identify tools and resources to support the development and implementation of a successful antimicrobial stewardship program in oral health care.
  • Discuss when to refer patients for penicillin allergy assessment, and practice communication with an interprofessional health care team.

This course is designed for dentists, hygienists, and assistants.
